Alte Münze – Free zone . culture . events

“Alte Münze” is a former state mint located in Berlin-Mitte on the banks of the Spree. The building complex is situated in one of the oldest historic areas in the capital and has been protected under heritage conservation since the 1980s. From the 1930s onward, coins of various currencies were minted, including the Reichsmark, the East German currency, the Deutsche Mark and the Euro. The State Mint ceased production at the turn of the year 2005/2006, and Projekt030 GmbH revived the space in 2009. Since then, Alte Münze has become the home of an interdisciplinary community and a symbol of the successful cultural repurposing of historic urban spaces.

Münzgarten is a small oasis within the urban jungle around Alexanderplatz. It is an urban gardening project in cooperation with the café "The Greens" that offers an everyday gardening experience to visitors to Alte Münze and local residents. The use of the urban areas for gardening provides our city bees a place to live and "The Greens" café the opportunity to grow healthy and fresh produce. Gardening, food policy, economic, social, artistic and urban planning issues are discussed here.

dome – building 3

Well over a decade ago, the thundering sound of the minting machinery within the walls of the mint went silent, the coins lit up the passageways one last time, and the engravers came up from the depths of the cellar after a long day’s work. Time has changed many things, but the future brings new life into the historic rooms, such as the expanded dome area where small workshops, conferences and presentations can be held.
